| Abstract |
Background. The creative activity of the poet, translator and literary critic Peter Isayevich Weinberg (1831–1908) aroused a keen interest in his contemporaries.During the last years of his life he was surrounded by fame, respect and public attention, took an indispensable part in the significant events of the literary and cultural life. Partly, he was seen as one of the last writers of the great generation represented by the names of F. M. Dostoyevsky and M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, N. G. Chernyshevsky and N. S. Leskov, partly – as a prominent promoter of creativity of foreign authors, the translator of new formation who was trying to pass the spirit of the original as close as possible. The aim of the study is to comprehend the perception of literary career of P. I. Weinberg, his artistic personality by younger contemporaries – A. A. Blok, I. A. Bunin, V. Y. Brusov, Z. N. Gippius, M. A. Voloshin and etc.
Materials and methods. The materials for the analysis were original and translated poetry and dramatic works, literary critical articles of the early XX century, diary, epistolary, memoir and documentary sources. The comparative-historical, comparative- typological and biographical methods of research were used in the article.
Results. The numerous facts of perception and understanding the creativity of P. I. Weinberg by Russian literature of the early XX century were identified and systematized and, besides, some facts and materials were found in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, while analysing rare diaries and epistolary materials.
Conclusions. The study established the ambiguity of perception of P. I. Weinberg’s creative figure by his younger contemporaries, primarily A. A. Blok, who tried from a certain distance to assess the original and translated works of P. I. Weinberg, noting his luck in the readings of Shakespeare («Othello», «The Merchant of Venice») and failures in the interpretations of H. Heine’s poetry and prose, Z. N. Gippius who constantly communicated with P. I. Weinberg in the last years of his life, V. Y. Brusov who engaged in the open printed debate with the interpreter and characterized his creations as «deplorable», M. A. Voloshin who was interested in the results of H. Heine’s readings made by P. I. Weinberg.
